THE VOYAGE OF SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS™

(The 24 nautical markers)

  1. In the beginning the entrepreneurs inspiration caused a seed to be planted that was watered and fed until form was created blossoming into a flower that we called our VISION
  2. Other people hearing of the venture offered their capital to help finance the voyage and grow the seed and were invited onboard and we called them our SHAREHOLDERS
  3. The shareholders set about recruiting a person capable of sailing the ship through unchartered waters; one who possessed superior skills of character and technical ability and we called this person our LEADER
  4. The leader was then asked to hire and form a competent and skilled team that would oversee, motivate and manage the day to day running of all activities on the ship and we called this our MANAGEMENT TEAM
  5. The management team were charged with the task of hiring skilled artisans and able bodied men and women who would carry out the day to day tasks and we called this our CREW
  6. The leader and the management team were called upon to design a plan that ensured the ship, its crew and cargo reached their destination in good shape and would therefore be fit and ready for further sailings and we called this our STRATEGY
  7. The strategy was broken down into bite sized chunks that we called ‘goals’ and then further into detailed ‘action steps’ that would make it easy for the team to implement and together we called this our BUSINESS PLAN
  8. Scouts were sent ahead to survey the new lands and identify the needs of the inhabitants there including the number of merchants supplying similar produce and we called this our RESEARCH
  9. We prepared a forecast of projected revenues and costs to ensure we could sell in such quantities to deliver a surplus to repay the shareholders and invest in future voyages and we called this our BUDGET
  10. On the basis of our research and the budget we commenced producing our products on board so as to meet our customers’ needs as to volume, quality, price and delivery and we called this our PRODUCTION, PRICING & DISTRIBUTION
  11. All manner of opportunities were explored as to enticing inhabitants of the new lands to purchase our produce and remain loyal throughout each and every return voyage and we called these people our CUSTOMERS and the means for securing their business and loyalty our MARKETING & CRM PLAN
  12. We shared the inspiration and vision with the whole of the ships company and excited them with the prospects for the journey and the potential rewards that lay ahead in both hard and soft currency and we called this our ENGAGEMENT
  13. Together we designed all manner of acceptable conduct and drew up a values sheet that was hung from the mainsail for all to see and this we called this our CORE VALUES and CODE OF CONDUCT that in time grew to be our CULTURE.
  14. In time we discovered our own ‘single best way’ to carry out all manner of tasks and formalized them to ensure that each was carried out in a consistent and quality manner and implemented periodic checks to ensure ongoing compliance and this we called our POLICIES, SYSTEMS , PROCEDURES & AUDIT PROCESS
  15. The vital signs for the success of our voyage were identified as six in number and they were diligently monitored on a frequent basis and deviations immediately reported and acted upon to get us back on course and we called this our DASHBOARD
  16. We carefully planned each working day in advance and ensured the whole team were working diligently at all times and avoiding all manner of unnecessary distractions and undue down time and we called this our PRODUCTIVITY
  17. Clear instructions were given in writing as to the roles, responsibilities and tasks assigned to each team member and we called this our JOB DESCRIPTIONS
  18. All manner of acceptable verbal and written communications were clearly tabled for all to see and meetings were held to transfer what should be known from one ear to another and we called this our MEETINGS & COMMUNCIATION
  19. Time was scheduled to review our progress and performance against our plans and adherence to protocols and procedures and the results entered in the ships log and we called this our GOVERNANCE & REPORTING
  20. At regular intervals all of the crew including the management team sat down to discuss all manners of performance and behavior in a manner conducive to self improvement and we called this our PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS
  21. Fully conscious of the need to retain and grow a competent management team and crew for future voyages we designed all manner of opportunities for key people to remain on board and we called this our SUCCESSION PLAN
  22. The crew are favorably drilled to carry out each duty without the near and present watchful eye of the overseer and pledge their own quality and measure it so self pride takes the place of the ‘heavy hand’ and we call this EMPOWERMENT
  23. All manners of challenges cross our bows and test the character of all those on board and all times our reasoning is sound and our action swift and measure of knowledge is stored below decks and referenced whenever the needs arises and we call this our KNOWLDEGE CAPTURE & MANAGEMENT
  24. All manner of ships games were scheduled to meet the needs of those off duty and taking time to smell the sea air was encouraged to all whose frantic days and nights were all consuming in the pursuit of our goals and we called this our FUN & WORK LIFE BALANCE
